A member of the UN Millennium Project Task Force on Improving the Lives of Slum Dwellers (2002–04), she subsequently led Global Studio, an action-research initiative supporting urban professionals working with the urban poor. Global Studio engaged more than 600 students, academics and professionals from 66 universities across 30 countries through programs and conferences in Istanbul, Vancouver, Johannesburg and Bhopal (2005–12). The project was exhibited at the UN General Assembly (2005), Customs House Sydney (2008), and the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (2009), with sanitation initiatives later featured in Design with the Other 90% (Smithsonian, 2011). Since 2006, Rubbo has contributed to eight UN-Habitat World Urban Fora. In 2012, she led People Building Better Cities, a travelling exhibition shown in 18 cities across 10 countries (2013–15), including WUF7 Medellín and the UIA Congress in Durban. She is currently working on Accelerating the SDGs, including the Local Project Challenge launched in 2019, which received over 7,000 public votes and was presented at WUF10 Abu Dhabi (2020). In 2021, Rubbo was invited to co-chair the UIA23 Congress Resilient Communities track. Her publications address resilient communities, design education, women in development, housing, and architect Marion Mahony Griffin. A Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects, her awards include the UIA Vassilis Sgoutas Prize mention (2014) and the Neville Quarry Education Award (2011). She serves on the Board of the Consortium for Sustainable Urbanization and is a member of the Habitat Civil Society Working Group.
