Claire Edwards
Member and Early-career Advisor on Public Space
Claire is a practitioner and researcher (MRes) who contributes to creating inclusive public spaces, cities and to our understanding of place and people’s connection to it. Including exploring ways to increase public participation in the design and development process, co-creation and collaborative practice. She is interested in the fulfilment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially related to liveability and spatial equity; Additionally, in informal, flexible spaces for experimentation, and places that support cultural expression and play. Her MRes, 2015, ‘A critical discussion of the provision of public space for young people in the UK with analysis of international best practice’ uses the UNCRC, ‘right to the city’, and affordance theory as a theoretical framework. The thesis considers the cultural, socio-economic, environmental, conceptual and policy factors affecting young people’s access to and provision within public space, such as privatisation, mobility and health. It explores theoretical concepts, arts and cultural interventions, and approaches, such as the playful city, to transform space. The case studies focus on participatory practices and conceptual and policy insights to inform practice, available here. More recently, Claire has contributed to conferences, academic journals, professional publications, and university and secondary school student learning. She has received a number of Government grants to undertake projects related to our connection to place, liveability and co-creation in public space. She advocates for places that allow for play and lingering, and for safe, independent mobility. Claire also has extended experience working in the arts, design and cultural sectors.
