Mahmoud El Doukhi is a PhD candidate in Architecture at Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU) and a research assistant at EMU’s Urban Research and Development Center (URDC). His academic work focuses on public space, neighbourhood life, participatory approaches, sensory design, sustainability, and the everyday experience of urban environments. His current doctoral research explores public and semi-public open spaces in urban neighbourhoods, with particular attention to community engagement, place attachment, inclusive public space quality, and the relationship between housing, neighbourhood life, and urban experience.
Alongside his doctoral research, Mahmoud contributes to academic and research activities related to urban studies, public space, sustainable urban environments, and community-oriented design. He has been involved in research and reporting work connected to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly within the context of university campuses and sustainability-oriented urban practices. His interests also include urban morphology, spatial perception, gendered perceptions of safety in public space, sustainability in architectural education, and the role of sensory and participatory methods in understanding how people use, perceive, and attach meaning to urban spaces.
