Mark Merer
Member and Senior Advisor on Public Space
Mark was brought up in an architectural hands-on milieu in the Far East, where his father was working as an architect on large building projects and infrastructure throughout the sixties and seventies. He saw how ideas become reality and the complexity of the process of transformation. In his early years, he worked on construction sites, learning first-hand the complications of realising a project. He later trained as an Artist/sculptor at Bristol Art College, where his interest in the interrelationship of object and context has lead naturally, in recent years to the design and construction of buildings and spaces. He has established his reputation over the last 40 years as an innovator, winning awards and commissions both public and private, for his buildings and sculptures in the UK and abroad. He believes that Art should be integral to the existence of a project and part of its process in understanding the physical and social context of a space, not something superimposed at a later date. One of his larger projects in the UK for 68 houses called Cubis, in the town of Bruton in Somerset, has just completed phase 1 and phase 2 should be completed in 2024. A project, taking a bottom-up approach, he designed and instigated at the request of the Town. Mark is currently based in Somerset, although he has undertaken work throughout Europe, North America, India and China. His primary obsession is exploring ways to achieve a holistic approach to the built environment, initially through artistic research, and he is currently working on a design for a new Arts and cultural centre for Weymouth College.
