Volunteer for the Public Space Academy
Miodrag Mitrašinović is an architect, urbanist, author, and Professor of Urbanism and Architecture at Parsons School of Design, The New School, in New York City. His work sits at the intersection of design, public space, and social change, with a sustained focus on how architecture and urbanism can foster democratic, participatory, and inclusive public realms. Trained in Serbia, the Netherlands, and the United States, Mitrašinović brings a distinctly transnational perspective to questions of urban transformation, infrastructure, and community governance. His scholarly contributions include influential books and edited volumes such as Total Landscape, Theme Parks, Public Space, Concurrent Urbanities: Designing Infrastructures of Inclusion, and Public Space Reader, as well as Architecture and the Public World: Kenneth Frampton. His research advances two complementary lines of inquiry: the role of designing as an agent of social and political change, and the infrastructural and generative capacities of public space, particularly where territory, governance, and community organising intersect. His early books were supported by grants from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. In 2025, Mitrašinović completed the 45-minute documentary film The Making of Corona Plaza, Queens, produced with research assistants at The New School. Through the voices of community organisers, activists, street vendors, artists, designers, and public officials, the film documents a community-led transformation of public space in an immigrant neighbourhood, revealing its social, cultural, economic, and political significance. Before joining The New School in 2005, Mitrašinović held teaching and research appointments at the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Florida, and Kyoto University. He is an active lecturer, editor, and academic leader whose work is published and presented internationally.
