Nathalie Boucher
Member and Senior Advisor on Public Space
Urban anthropologist Nathalie Boucher holds a master’s degree in anthropology from Laval University and a doctorate in urban studies from the National Institute for Scientific Research. For nearly 25 years, she has been exploring human behaviour in public spaces, now as a researcher and director at Respire, which she founded. Respire is a Montreal-based non-profit organisation that offers qualitative research services on urban issues. With a team of graduates in anthropology, sociology, and geography, Respire has unique, rigorous, and scientific expertise to support private and community municipal organisations in better understanding human behaviour in public spaces. With a team of graduates in anthropology, sociology, and geography, Respire possesses unique, rigorous, and scientific expertise that enables it to support municipal, private, and community organisations in gaining a better understanding of their reality. This, in turn, helps them take concrete action towards resolving social or developmental problems. Respire uses traditional and innovative qualitative methods to shed light on urban life, such as participant observation, in situ mapping, tracking, photovoice, and exploratory walk. Our approach values the rich and unique—but often overlooked—contribution of these methods to improving the city and the experiences of city dwellers.
