Stavroula Georgiou
Member and Early-career Advisor on Public Space
Stavroula Georgiou is a Lawyer at the Supreme Court at the Athens Bar Association with a strong expertise in Public, Civil and EU Law. She has been practising law since 2005 and has experience in various areas of legal research and litigation. She is fluent in English and French. She holds a PhD in public law from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2016) with a thesis entitled “The constitutional foundations of public space” published in 2017. Her doctoral research focused on the examination of the physical public space as the field where the constitutional game of democratic principles is played out and on the necessity of its distinct constitutional protection. She is deeply interested in the diverse actual and legal nature of each public space, the development of legal tools for the protection of the right to public space and the principles ruling it, such as autonomy, equality, inclusivity, pluralism, neutrality, subsidiarity, proportionality and the prohibition of abuse of rights in a democratic society. She has written several articles which have been published on the academic platform created by the Themistocles and Dimitris Tsatsos Foundation – Centre for European Constitutional Law (a research institute based in Athens, Greece). In 2021-2022, she was an academic fellow in the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and she delivered lectures about human rights. She is passionate about the explicit recognition of the right to public space at a constitutional level.
