Following the launch of our Public Space Academy at the 10th World Urban Forum in Katowice in May 2022, City Space Architecture hosted its first in-person workshop in Bologna, dedicated to Suburban Spark. Unlocking Interdisciplinary Public Space Strategies for Neglected Areas, taking place at our headquarters Museo Spazio Pubblico in Bologna, from 1–10 September 2023. This 10‑day workshop offered an intensive and immersive exploration of the multifaceted nature of public space, addressing its challenges while seeking innovative approaches and solutions.
Over ten intense days, up to twenty participants from Mongolia (scholarship recipient), Greece, Ecuador, Israel, France, Lithuania, Colombia, and Brazil (scholarship recipient), from different disciplines, explored neglected suburban areas through site visits, peer‑to‑peer learning, and collaborative design sessions, tackling public space challenges with innovative, interdisciplinary strategies.
The programme combined training on community resilience and democratic urban design with international lectures, film screenings, and networking events, including a public seminar with Bologna’s institutions and trips to Milan and the Venice Architecture Biennale.
Participants engaged directly with global experts, local stakeholders, and cutting‑edge tools, while gaining membership in City Space Architecture and a certificate of completion, making the workshop a unique platform for learning, experimentation, and international exchange on public space.
